The 2018 Charlottesville Tom Sox are pleased to announced junior left-handed pitcher Cody Maw from Charleston Southern University as our next contracted player.
Maw is a 6’0, 170 pounder from Summerville, SC. He is the 3rd pitcher we’ve gotten from the Buccaneers, who compete in the Big South Conference. Previously, both Daniel (DJ) Johnson and Wil Hartsell have played for the Tom Sox. Both had tremendous summer seasons.
“Manimaw”, as his Pitching Coach George Shaefer (was the Head Coach of the New Market Rebels in 2015) likes to call him, was tremendous for CSU in 2017. In 16 appearances, he had 5 starts, and 53 innings pitched. Maw had 50 strikeouts and only 8 walks. In 2 seasons with the Buccaneers, he has 80 strike outs and 17 walks.
Last summer, he competed in the Coastal Plains League. He had 13 appearances and threw 43.2 innings. Maw’s ERA was 4.53 and once again, he showed the control of his baseball that we hunt, striking out 53 and walking only 13.
Most recently, Maw pitched five innings in CSU’s Fall World Series, and he allowed one earned run with two hits and nine strikeouts.
GM Jeff Burton said “we sought out LHPs with a history of dominating the strike zone. Much like Joe Burris in 2017, we expect Cody will do for using in 2018 what his track record shows he’s done for 2 seasons at school. We love what we have heard about his competitiveness…that is what you look for as you are closing out big games in a championship run.”
Welcome to the Tom Sox, Manimaw!
