Recap

Tom Sox Fall on the Road at Harrisonburg 9-2, in 2nd Place at the All-Star Break

By: Zach Hamilton

On a beautiful night in Harrisonburg, Turks starter, Alex Rodriguez was able to set the Tom Sox down in order in the first inning while Hunter McMullen worked around a hit-by-pitch to have a scoreless innings. Charlottesville loaded the bases with two outs on back-to-back singles by Brett Centracchio and Nick Oar. Will Allocca followed up with a walk but the Tom Sox were unable to push the game’s opening run across in the inning.

Harrisonburg’s Kyle Johnson collected the first hit of the night for the Turks with a one out single in the third inning. After Zach Little reached on a single, a double steal allowed Johnson to score the first run of the night. Rodriguez continued to shut down Charlottesville’s bats on the mound, while the Turks bats stayed hot.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Turks plated eight runs on seven hits including two triples by Austin Embler and Orynn Veillon. McMullen was relieved by Cameron Weinberger with two outs in the inning and he struck out the only Turk he faced. Charlottesville also committed two errors in the frame, which made seven of the eight runs that scored unearned.

Looking for an answer in the fifth, Anthony Lazar led off the inning with a walk for the Tom Sox and moved around to third base on a double by Alex Mardiney. Patrick McColl, who had extended his hitting streak to ten games earlier, grounded out to first base and Lazar touched home for the first Charlottesville run of the night to make it 9-1. With momentum on the side of the Tom Sox, Weinberger put Harrisonburg down in order in the bottom of the fifth.

Harrisonburg relieved Rodriguez in the sixth and brought on Joseph Mannelly. For the second time on the night, Charlottesville loaded the bases on two walks and a single by Lazar. Mardiney stepped to the plate and singled home Oar to make it a 9-2 contest. After recording two outs, Mannelly was lifted for Luke Scherzer with the bases still loaded, but the Tom Sox could not connect for any more runs.

Both bullpens silenced the offense for the rest of the ballgame with Weinberger going three and one-third innings pitched. Antonio Menendez came on and pitched a clean eighth inning for the Tom Sox but they ultimately fall to Harrisonburg 9-2. Charlottesville (15-10) ends the first half before the all-star break in second place in the south division. Meanwhile, Harrisonburg (14-13) will remain in last place in the south. Following the all-star break, Charlottesville will host Front Royal for a double-header on Monday at 5pm. The Turks will travel to Waynesboro on Tuesday at 7pm.
