Tom Sox Ride Strong Pitching to 3-0 Win at Waynesboro
First Shutout Win of the Season
The Charlottesville Tom Sox pushed across single runs in each of the first three innings, then rode the combined four-hit pitching of Sean McCracken (Johns Hopkins) and Sean Byrnes (Elon) to a 3-0 win at Waynesboro on Saturday night.
McCracken (1-0) went seven innings, allowing three hits and striking out five. He did not walk a batter. He has not been scored upon in eleven innings of work this VBL season.
Byrnes earned his first save, going two innings and allowing one hit and striking out two. He worked around two ninth inning walks to record the final out on a ground ball with runners at second and third.
The Tom Sox got the only run they needed in the top of the first, when second baseman Michael Wielansky (College of Wooster) singled, advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored on an RBI single from first baseman Ari Sechopoulos (College of Charleston). For Wielansky, it was the first of two runs he would score on the night, bringing his season total to 12 runs – best in the Valley League.
In the second, RF Michael DeRenzi (Georgetown) singled and scored on an RBI single from SS Bryce Windham (ODU). In the third, Wielansky scored on an RBI groundout by 3B Justin Cook (Richmond).
With the win, the Tom Sox improve to 6-2 on the season and increase their lead in the South Division to 1.5 games over Waynesboro and Staunton. The Tom Sox return home Sunday night at 7:00 to host Covington. It will be First Responders Night at C-ville Weekly Ballpark, honoring area police, fire, and EMS personnel.
