Harrisonburg Turks 5 – Tom Sox 2 (L)

June 30 @ 7:30 pm

Tom Sox Fall to Turks, 5-2
Julia Stumbaugh

The Charlottesville Tom Sox saw Saturday night’s low-scoring pitcher’s duel explode into a flurry of runs against in the eighth inning as the Tom Sox (12-7) fell to the Harrisonburg Turks (12-10), 5-2.

The Tom Sox started out the game strong, with Zac Ching drawing a lead-off walk and then making it to third base on a wild pitch and a ground out. That was the nearest Charlottesville would get to scoring for the next four innings, as Turks starting pitcher Andrew Bohm forced the Tom Sox through multiple three-batter at-bats in which the visitors picked up only a single hit, were caught stealing twice and struck out three times. Meanwhile, despite six strikeouts in three innings thrown by starting pitcher Evan Justice, the Turks took advantage of a hit-by-pitch and a wild throw to score in the bottom of the third and take a 1-0 lead.

After fighting through several stifling innings, Patrick McColl tied the game on an RBI single in the top of the sixth, scoring Max Bazin to even the score, 1-1. As Charlottesville bats gained momentum, the Tom Sox had the chance to take the lead with runners on the corners and David Harding up to bat. But Harding’s strong hit landed in the glove of a Harrisonburg outfielder, sending the game into the bottom of the seventh still knotted at one.

There, the Tom Sox were the victim of an unlucky bounce, as a throw from Zac Ching at third hit a Turk’s back and was knocked out of first baseman Dom D’Alessandro’s reach, scoring a runner and allowing Harrisonburg to take the lead, 2-1. There, things spiraled out of control for the visitors: the next batter walked to load the bases before Zach Little stepped up and hit a 2-RBI double to right field, bringing the lead to 4-1. A sacrifice fly from the next batter up put the Tom Sox down 5-1 heading into the final two innings.

A lead-off hit-by-pitch, the fourth of the game, started out the eighth by once again putting Ching on base. Pinch-hitter Anthony Lazar then scored Ching on an RBI single, cutting the Turks’ lead to three runs. That was as close as the Tom Sox would get to tying the outing. They went down in order in the top of the ninth to allow the Turks a walk-off win, 5-2.

With this defeat, the Tom Sox fall to 5-1 after a loss and 6-6 within their division. They’ll look to snap this losing streak, their first of the summer, as they take on the Purcellville Cannons on Sunday at C-VILLE Weekly Ballpark.
