6/4/2018: Charlottesville Tom Sox (13) vs. New Market Rebels (3)
The Charlottesville Tom Sox were able to withstand a comeback attempt from the New Market Rebels on Monday night, answering an early surge from the visiting team with a record-breaking explosion of offense that allowed the Tom Sox (1-1) to win their home opener against the Rebels (0-2), 13-3.
Tim Miller, who pitched four innings in his Charlottesville debut, started the game out with a scoreless top of the first. The defending Valley Baseball League champions then wasted no time in getting on the board with a single from Eric Stock in the bottom of the inning. Dominic D’Alessandro followed with a two-run homer in his first summer at-bat to put the home team up 3-0.
After Miller kept the Rebels’ bats quiet once again in a quick three-out top of the second, the Tom Sox looked to increase their lead. Despite loading runners on second and third base, however, they were unable to get a man home.
Facing down a three-run deficit going into the top of the third, the Rebels, also looking for their first win of the season, managed to load the bases on two walks with zero outs on the board. Precise defensive plays from Tom Sox infielders held the Rebels to just two runs, and Charlottesville managed to finish out the third still in the lead, 3-2.
With the visitors threatening to tie the outing, the Tom Sox put the game away in the bottom of the fourth. A double steal by Zac Ching and Nick DiPonzio got runners to second and third. Will Allocca then arrowed a single deep through the middle of the field to send both home, padding the Tom Sox lead to 5-2. The hits continued to pile up: a single from Anthony Lazar, followed by a walk by Jack Morris, loaded the bases for Charlottesville. A caught out from Patrick McColl brought the runner on third to home. Finally, a two-run single from Stock finished out the inning, bringing the score to 8-2.
A pitching change for Charlottesville brought Brandon Reitz to the mound, who held the Rebels to two hits and zero runs through the next four innings as Tom Sox bats continued to swing. In the bottom of the fifth, Jalen Harrison smashed a three-run homer left of the scoreboard, putting the Tom Sox up 11-2. Charlottesville finished out scoring with two last runs in the sixth inning to make the game 13-2.
Although the Rebels eked a final run out of closer Antonio Menendez in the top of the ninth to bring the final score to 13-3, the Tom Sox claimed the walk-off victory to start off their summer, extending a home winning streak that stretches back to the 2017 season. DiPonzio, D’Alessandro, Harrison and Allocca all picked up multiple hits, while Reitz claimed the win with his five strikeouts and two hits over four innings.
With 13 runs on Monday night, the Tom Sox shattered their previous home scoring record of 10 runs, scored against the Strasburg Express on June 27, 2017. The team will look to ride this offensive momentum as they take on the Purcellville Cannons on Tuesday night at C-VILLE Weekly Ballpark.
