Hot Start Not Enough to Push Tom Sox to Victory, Fall at New Market 7-3

By: Zach Hamilton

Charlottesville scores three runs in the first two innings, but fall to the New Market Rebels 7-3 on Friday afternoon. Brett Centracchio finished the contest with a double, RBI-single, and a run scored for the Tom Sox. Nine runners were left on base by Charlottesville in the loss. The Tom Sox locked up the second seed in the south division for this year’s playoffs which begin Sunday. The Tom Sox will wrap up the regular season at Harrisonburg tomorrow night.

With the sun shining in the top of the first inning, Brett Centracchio connected for a one out double. After advancing to third base on a groundout by Alex Mardiney, Centracchio then raced home on a wild pitch from Rebels starter Dan Nicholls. Working against Charlottesville’s Colby Lee in the bottom half of the inning, New Market found their answer. Kobe Lopez started the inning with a single but was erased on Andrew Eyster’s fielder’s choice. Eyster later tied the ballgame at 1-1 on an RBI-single by Oraj Anu.

The Tom Sox kept the line moving in the top of the second. Will Allocca doubled with one out and Max Bazin was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. VCU’s Zac Ching singled to rightfield and great throw from Eyster in rightfield made a close play at the plate but Allocca was ruled safe. Centracchio stepped back in the box with one out and picked up his second hit of the day in as many innings to score Bazin.

In a 3-1 deficit, the Rebels began to climb back into the ballgame in the bottom of the second. Andrew Kasiski led-off with a walk and scored on the very next pitch which was turned around for a double by Austin Bogart. The next batter, Cris DeGuzman singled in Bogart to even the score at 3-3. Lee came back out for the third inning and New Market got another lead-off man on base thanks to a Chase Sudduth single. Sudduth then came around and crossed home on an RBI-single by Bogart.

Ryan Mossman made a call to the bullpen for Charlottesville and brought on right-hander Niko Jenkins. Jenkins induced a pop out and strikeout to retire the first two batters he faced. Sudduth then reach via a base on balls and Oraj Anu crushed a homerun to right-centerfield to increase the margin to 6-3. New Market added the final run of the contest in the sixth off a sac-fly by Justin King that scored Eyster, making it 7-3. Cameron Weinberger came on for the Tom Sox and struck out one over two clean innings of work in the loss.

Ryan Andrzejczyk picks up the win for the Rebels with six shutout innings of relief. Meanwhile, starter Colby Lee gets tagged for his second loss of the season. Charlottesville falls to 24-17 on the season and is currently hanging on to the second seed in the south division with one game remaining. New Market moves to 22-17 on the year and are solidifying themselves as the three seed in the north division. The Tom Sox will wrap up the regular season on Saturday night at the Harrisonburg Turks. First pitch is set for 9pm. New Market will host Front Royal at 7:30pm tomorrow night.
