By: Zach Hamilton

The Tom Sox fought back to tie the game but fall to the Express in ten, 13-12. Charlottesville saw Dom D’Alessandro tally five more RBI on the season as he now leads the Valley Baseball League with 40 on the summer. Patrick McColl hit his first homerun of the season as every Tom Sox found their way on base during the four-hour ballgame. After a combine 25 runs and 31 hits, the ballgame came down to a wild pitch that left the field of play. With the loss, Charlottesville falls to third place in the south division.

As is typically the case at FirstBank Park, the offense came early and often. Charlottesville’s Anthony Lazar led off the ballgame with a single. Alex Mardiney followed up with a walk to put two on for D’Alessandro. The GW product collected his fourth homerun of the season with a three-run shot to left-centerfield. Patrick McColl made it back-to-back homeruns with his first of the year. With the Tom Sox up 4-0, Strasburg found an answer in the bottom of the first.

Six runs came around to score for the Express as eleven batters came to the plate. Sean McCracken finished his start with just 0.2 of an inning and allowed six runs. Luke Burton came on in relief for Charlottesville to end the 48 minute first inning. The Express kept the offense moving after the Tom Sox were retired in order in the second. Three more runs scored on four hits, including a Kieton Rivers double, to make it a 9-4.

Charlottesville was able to close the gap in the top of the third when McColl singled and later scored on an RBI-single by Will Allocca to make it 9-5. A hit-by-pitch came around to plate the tenth run of the night for Strasburg in the fourth and consequently ended Burton’s appearance. He finished with three innings and gave up four runs while striking out two.

Cameron Weinberger came on and shut down the Express allowing just one run on a solo homerun over his first two innings of relief for the Tom Sox. Meanwhile, Charlottesville continued clawing their way back into the contest. In the top of the fifth, Allocca moved to 3-3 on the night with a double and plated the six run on an Anthony Lazar RBI base hit. An inning later, Nick Bellafronto walked scored on an RBI-single by Nick DiPonzio making it 11-7.

In the bottom of the seventh, Strasburg stretched the lead back to five with lead-off walk coming around to score to make it 12-7 Express. The Tom Sox would get the offense rolling again in the eighth as they pushed across five runs to tie the game. D’Alessandro emptied the bases with a two RBI-single with no outs and another run on an error on the play. Strasburg extended the inning with three errors defensively and pinch hitter Nick Oar tied the contest with a double into the gap, making it 12-12.

Weinberger, who pitched 4.1 innings and gave up just two runs on five hits, gave way to Niko Jenkins, who came on and pitched a scoreless ninth in his first appearance of the summer. After a quiet top of the tenth, Kieton Rivers doubled down the rightfield line to begin the frame. Jenkins then got to pop-outs as Rivers moved to third base. With the winning run 90 feet away, a wild pitch got over the backstop and out of play for the walk-off wild pitch, making it 13-12.

Charlottesville drops to 16-13 on the season and are now in third place in the south division. Strasburg picks up win eleven on season and are now in fifth place in the north division at 11-17. The win was award to Sam Ewald, who pitched a scoreless tenth inning, and the loss was handed to Niko Jenkins in his first appearance. The Tom Sox remain on the road as they travel to Woodstock tomorrow night at 7pm. Meanwhile, the Express pack up and head to Covington for a 7pm first pitch from Casey Field.
