The Charlottesville Tom Sox defeated  2-1 the Waynesboro Generals 2-1 in dramatic fashion on Friday night. With the win, Charlottesville now has a 1.5 game lead over Waynesboro for second place in the Valley Baseball League South Division.

Pinch-runner Jalen Harrison scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth to break a 1-1 stalemate and lift the visitors to their second win of the season at Kate Collins Field.

The Tom Sox came into Friday’s contest still chasing Covington for the number-one spot in the South while also trying to fend off Waynesboro and secure home field advantage for the playoffs.

Jake Hershman, the starter on the mound for Charlottesville, was able to keep things scoreless until the bottom of the 3rd inning, where Waynesboro was able to strike first off of an RBI double.

Charlottesville came right back and responded in the top of the 4th as Nick Bellafronto’s sacrifice fly brought in the tying run.

Antonio Menendez took the mound for the Tom Sox in the bottom of the 6th inning. Menendez picked up right where Hershman left off and kept Waynesboro scoreless for the remainder of the game. He would end up recording four strikeouts while only allowing one hit.

The Tom Sox finally broke through in the top of the 9th to seal the deal as Harrison scored from third base off of a passed ball.. Waynesboro was never able to respond in the bottom of the 9th.
