Tom Sox 8 – Covington Lumberjacks 2 (W)

July 3 @ 7:00 pm

Charlottesville Uses Five Run First Inning to Power Past the Lumberjacks 8-2

By: Zach Hamilton

Charlottesville’s offense got hot in the first inning and never looked back as they defeated Covington 8-2 on the road. Dom D’Alessandro had the big bat on the night while going 3-5 with a homerun and four RBIs. On the mound, Kyle Nicolas pitched four no-hit innings while giving up one run and striking out four. Hunter McMullen shined in his first appearance of the summer by pitching three innings of relief and gave up just one hit, plus struck out four. The win moves the Tom Sox back into first place in the South Division as the league approaches the All-Star break this weekend.

Covington starter, Evan McAndrew never got a chance to get comfortable on the mound in the first inning. Second baseman Anthony Lazar led off the ballgame with a single to rightfield off of McAndrew. Alex Mardiney then watched ball four and that put two runners on for the Tom Sox RBI leader, Dom D’Alessandro. The George Washington slugger picked up his second homerun of the season on a blast to leftfield. Charlottesville, now up 3-0, was not finished. Back-to-back walks to Patrick McColl and Brett Centracchio put two more runners on base. McColl came around to score on an RBI-bunt-single by Nick DiPonzio and Centracchio plated the fifth and final run of the inning on a wild pitch. However, McAndrew was relieved before the right-hander could claim an out by Jordyn Eglite.

Kyle Nicolas stepped on the mound with a large lead and never looked back. A three-up, three-down first inning was followed by a great job in the bottom of the second of stranding two walks on base. In the bottom of the third, Bennet Hosteller picked up a one out walk and later came around to plate Covington’s first run on a wild pitch from Nicolas. Charlottesville answered right back in the fourth. Will Allocca was hit by a pitch to begin the frame and with one out, Lazar reached base via a walk. Alex Mardiney then made it on base thanks to an error by the second baseman and picked up the RBI sending Allocca home. D’Alessandro made his way back to the dish and singled in his fourth RBI of the night scoring Lazar to make it a 7-1 contest.

The Tom Sox made a call to the bullpen for the fifth inning and brought on Hunter McMullen for his first appearance of the summer out of Florida. McMullen gave up just one hit over three solid innings of work. He also struck out four batters and reach mid-90s on the radar gun. Charlottesville picked up their final run of the night in the sixth inning when Patrick McColl hit a ground-rule double that allowed D’Alessandro to score the eighth run of the night. Joshua Romero and Chase Best came on for Covington and closed out the ballgame. The Lumberjacks were able to get a spark in the ninth on a single by Peter Battaglia and a sac-fly by Matt Law that created the final score of 8-2. Meanwhile Jared Wetherbee finished with two innings and three strikeouts for the Tom Sox

Hunter McMullen earned the win in his first appearance of the season, while McAndrew was given the loss after failing to record an out. Charlottesville moves to 14-7 on the summer and are now back in first place in the South Division, while Covington falls to 15-8. The Tom Sox will head back to C-Ville Weekly Ballpark for a special fourth of July celebration on Wednesday night as they host the Waynesboro Generals at 6pm. Covington will enjoy the holiday off before heading to Purcellville on Thursday.
