By: Matt Becker
COVINGTON, Va. - The Tom Sox looked to win two games in a row as they headed to Covington to take on the Lumberjacks. Today’s game was a makeup from a rainout on June 14th.
Charlottesville looks to improve its 7-10 record while Covington looks to improve its bottom-of-the-league 4-13 record.
Clayton Armah (Auburn) was the starter for the ‘Sox and looked to bounce back after his last start.
Let’s see how it played out:
After the ‘Sox stranded runners at second and third, Covington recorded a couple of two-out knocks to take a 2-0 lead.
Armah bounced back in the second inning, retiring the Lumberjacks in order, featuring two strikeouts.
In the top of the third, Xavier McCoury (Liberty) notched his second hit of the day with a screaming double to right-center field. The Liberty Flame then stole third for his third stolen bag of the game. The ‘Sox were not able to bring him home, and the side was retired.
Armah took the hill for the bottom of the third and continued to be in cruise control with another one-two-three inning, including a punchout to retire the side.
In the bottom of the fourth, Armah found himself in trouble with runners at second and third with one out. The Auburn Tiger was able to limit the damage, only conceding one run to make it 3-0.
After Will Yow (Virginia) walked with two outs and stole two bags, McCoury notched his third single of the day to bring home Yow and cut the lead to two in the top of the fifth. McCoury stole second base for his fourth stolen bag of the game. That steal would land McCoury in a four-way tie for the single-game stolen base record for the ‘Sox.
After runners made it safely to second and third with one out in the bottom of the fifth, Asher Sabom entered the game. Sabom allowed two runs to come home, making it a 5-1 game.
Armah’s final line was four and a third innings pitched, five hits, five runs, four earned runs, two walks and four strikeouts.
After getting two runners on with one out in the top of the seventh, the ‘Sox popped up twice to retire the side.
Covington was able to scratch across another run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 6-1.
The score would end up holding as the Luberjacks won it 6-1 despite McCoury's historic performance of going three-for-four with four stolen bases.
Up next: The ‘Sox (7-11) return home to take on the Harrisonburg Turks tomorrow night at CHO Airport Field. First pitch is set for 7:00 P.M EST.
