CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Tom Sox right-handed pitcher Evan Alwine has earned VBL South Pitcher of the Week for his performance at Covington on Friday July 26th, the league announced today (July 1).

In his start against the Lumberjacks, Alwine pitched seven full innings of shutout baseball while recording a season-high seven strikeouts. The Tom Sox earned a win, marking their third-in-a-row at the time.

Alwine only allowed two hits and no ‘Jacks reached base via walk. “I gotta give it up to my defense,” Alwine said after the game. “My seven strikeouts were good, but they made the 14 other outs.”

This season he has recorded 16 strikeouts in 20.2 innings pitched. The Florida native boasts a 2.61 ERA, which is good for fourth-best on the Tom Sox.

The Charlottesville veteran has also been chosen to represent the Valley Baseball League in next week’s inter-league all-star game with the Cal Ripken Sr. League. Lucas Cash and Brandon Dahlman were selected as all-stars along with Dahlman, as it was announced yesterday.

Heading into the month of July, the Tom Sox sit at 4th place in the VBL South standings. The team has been surging over the past 10 games, with a record of 7-3 and have been dancing with the Harrisonburg Turks in playoff positioning.

Charlottesville will be back in action tonight, Wednesday July 1st, when it travels to take on the Front Royal Cardinals. The Tom Sox will be back at CHO Airport Field on Thursday for an evening matchup against the Covington Lumberjacks.
