‘Sox Squander Chances, Fall to Turks, 8-2
HARRISONBURG, Va. – In a game where the ‘Sox out hit the Turks, eight to six, they also stranded four more runners than Harrisonburg, including two at third base. Harrisonburg took Charlottesville’s miscues and turned them into opportunities, to which they took full advantage in the bottom of the sixth. A five-spot for the Turks provided a huge lead, one that they coasted to an 8-2 win, and the South Division title.
The ‘Sox went down in order three times, with two of those instances being in both the first and second innings.
Harrisonburg captured an early lead with an RBI groundout and Jackson Schrafft RBI single.
The ‘Sox finally got some offense going in the third with back-to-back hits from Walker Buchanan and Lee Sowers (North Carolina). Nothing came out of this opportunity, as they were both stranded.
It took until the fourth inning for the ‘Sox to get on the scoreboard. Anderson French (Virginia Tech)cashed in on a passed ball to cut the Turks’ lead in half.
The ‘Sox didn’t score again until the seventh when Perry Hargett (North Carolina)drove in a run on a fielder’s choice, but that came after a big bottom of the sixth for Harrisonburg.
Relief pitcher Caden Harris (UVA Wise)dropped a ball at first base that proved to be pivotal as what could’ve been the first out of the inning ended up being the first of many base runners for Harrisonburg.
After a pair of singles, a couple of walks, and a Buchanan dropped ball that got lost in the lights of left field, the Turks suddenly led, 8-1.
The momentum had fully shifted to Harrisonburg, and they cruised from there on out, defeating the ‘Sox, 8-2.
