CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Charlottesville Tom Sox will host the Yorktown Coconuts in a first-of-its-kind exhibition matchup on June 1st, the team announced today. Half of the proceeds will go towards Aidan’s Lights Fund, an initiative to install lights at Pen Park in honor of Aidan Peters.
It will take place on Monday, June 1st at CHO Airport Field located at Charlottesville High School. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00pm.
“The game gives our team a chance to play an additional game against new competition early in the season,” Tom Sox President & GM Chesley Mullins said.
Yorktown is an independent summer baseball franchise, founded by a former Norfolk firefighter in 2025. The Coconuts travel across North Carolina and Virginia playing premiere teams in various summer collegiate leagues. This season, they intend to compete against teams from the Coastal Plains League, Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League, and Valley Baseball League – Charlottesville and the Front Royal Cardinals.
“We are super excited to play some new teams, make more memories and meet new friends along the way,” Yorktown Coconuts founder and manager Andy Powell said.
The contest will feature MAC Umpires and utilize Valley Baseball League rules.
“We are excited to welcome the Yorktown Coconuts to Charlottesville for this exhibition game… It is always fun to have a no pressure game to see how other teams operate and have a chance to play together so soon after arriving to town, ” Mullins said.
Aidan Peters was a lifelong baseball fan, who grew up playing at the Central Little League Fields. He passed away from cancer eight weeks after he graduated from Charlottesville High School. The Aidan’s Lights Fund has been set up in his honor to help fund field lights at Pen Park. More information on how to donate can be found at this link.
Led by Randy Tomlin, the Tom Sox begin their 2026 season next Friday (May 29) against the Waynesboro Generals. Charlottesville is in pursuit of its fifth title in franchise history. The full schedule can be found at tomsox.org/schedule.
