Charlottesville Falls to Waynesboro Despite Historic Inning
By: Landon Weaver
WAYNESBORO, Va. - The second inning was a record-setting display from Charlottesville. 12 runs plated, two home runs and every player scored. Despite that performance, the ‘Sox couldn’t hang on late as Waynesboro completed a monster comeback.
Nobody could have predicted what was about to happen when the ‘Sox went into the second inning down 1-0. What happened was pure chaos and pure bliss for the visitors.
Brock Clayton and Aiden Harris earned a walk and a single, respectively, to start the inning. Tommy Landsnes logged his first hit of the inning to bring home Clayton to even the score at 1-1.
Bryce Neely (Virginia) earned a bases-loaded walk to give the Tom Sox the lead, but it was Lucas Ream (Shippensburg) who blew the door off the hinges. Ream barreled the first ‘Sox grand slam since Patrick Niehus on June 10, 2025, a year ago to the day.
That blast gave Charlottesville a 6-1 lead, but they were far from done. Aiden Harris’ two-RBI single gave him his second hit in the inning. This was the first time a Tom Sox player achieved this feat since 2022, when Kalvin Anderson did it at Waynesboro. That single put the ‘Sox up 9-1.
Tommy Landsnes quickly matched Harris’ achievement with a three-run blast accompanied by a bat flip. 12-1 ‘Sox.
The greatest single-inning performance in ‘Sox history. 12 runs, all nine batters reached base, and all nine batters scored.
As great as that inning was, Waynesboro was quick to answer back across multiple innings. The Generals put up a seven-spot in the second, four more in the fourth and three in the sixth to put the game in jeopardy for Charlottesville.
All three runs in that sixth inning came off either an error or a wild pitch, but inevitably, that was the dagger for Charlottesville on the road.
After that second inning, the ‘Sox registered just five hits and one run. Late in the contest, Charlottesville still had chances to tie the game up. In the fourth, Waynesboro walked the bases loaded, and Landsnes had already scored on a passed ball.
With two outs in the inning, it seemed that the Tom Sox were primed to provide more insurance to an already hefty lead. But the bats faltered, and Charlottesville left three stranded.
Waynesboro used the momentum to their full advantage and rattled off seven straight runs to complete an 11-run comeback at home, winning 15-13 and moving to a VBL-best 8-1 record.
Up Next: Charlottesville (1-8) is on the road again on Thursday as they make their first trip of the season to Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park in Harrisonburg, VA. The ‘Sox take on the Turks (4-4) for the second time this season. Harrisonburg got the better of Charlottesville the first time these two teams faced off at CHO Airport Field, winning 3-1.
