CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Charlottesville Tom Sox (0-2) fell to the Woodstock River Bandits (2-0) in game two of its 2025 summer campaign, 8-7.
Following yesterday’s blowout defeat, the bats came alive for Charlottesville as it registered seven runs on 12 hits, highlighted by Kyle Langley’s (James Madison) two-hit, three RBI performance from the leadoff spot.
Langley sent one out to right field in the eighth, marking the second bomb of the season after Hudson Lutterman (Virginia Tech) tallied one of his own in the bottom of the fourth. The middle of the order continued to produce for the Tom Sox as both Tanner Schaedel (Old Dominion) and Jett Bristow (Virginia) registered two-hit days, following solid performances last night.
The Tom Sox worked back from a deficit following a three-run home run in the top of the first inning, but starter Eli DeRossi-Cytron (Mount St. Mary’s) settled down and didn’t allow another run across his five total innings of work.
Elijah Coston (VCU) followed in the sixth, giving up a run to make the deficit four runs for Charlottesville. Tristan Dietrich (Florida International) threw a scoreless seventh as both him and Coston held Woodstock hitless.
The Lutterman solo shot was the only offense for the Tom Sox until a five-run seventh inning gave them the lead. Walks to both JD Wolff (Air Force) and Jesus Cesari (Southeast Arkansas) were followed by Langley’s double. Adonys Velez (Florida International) was hit, which led to a Jackson Sirois bunt single with an errant throw that allowed Langley to score.
Sirois and Velez came home on a single up the middle by Patrick Niehus (Gardner-Webb) who rebounded well from a rough day yesterday. Niehus finished the day going 2-3 with two singles and a walk.
The 6-4 lead would jump up to a 7-5 lead after both sides scored in the eighth, and then disaster struck in the ninth for the Tom Sox. An infield single was followed by a walk and then a single into center field to load up the bases.
Left-handed reliever Alex Bingler (James Madison) struck out a River Bandit to record out number two before getting ahead on Luke Keister, who laced a double down the right field line. Two runners came into score before a defensive miscue allowed the third to score on the play.
That play gave the River Bandits the lead, and it was all Woodstock needed offensively before two-way fireballer Christian Toledo came in to shut the door, setting down Charlottesville in order in the bottom of the ninth to record his first save of the year.
