Randy Tomlin, the 2024 Maynard “Mo” Weber Manager of the Year, enters his second season as the Tom Sox’s Head Coach in 2025. In his first season in Charlottesville, the Tom Sox brought home the 2024 Valley Baseball League championship, their fourth in franchise history. 

The 2024 Tom Sox team upheld the level of consistency that has come to define the organization while also working through a number of setbacks that made the team one of the most resilient to ever take the field at Charlottesville High School. The 2024 ‘Sox lost more than half of their projected starting lineup, including everyday players Cade Belyeu, Jake Books, Johnnie Lopez, David Wiley, Cale Stricklin, and Tommy Roldan to on-field injuries, but Tomlin instilled a never-say-die mindset in the team which propelled them to the top of the league. Charlottesville brought home both the league regular season championship and South Division championship under Tomlin and were the only team in the league to notch 30 wins on the year. Additionally, six Tom Sox players were named to the All-Valley League team, tying a team record, in addition to Tomlin’s Manager of the Year honor.

“I feel grateful to be asked back,” Tomlin said. “The atmosphere [in 2024] was very good, and I felt like there was a lot of commitment to the growth of everything involved in the organization, to myself, and to the players.”

A proven winner at every level, Tomlin joins the Tom Sox while serving as Head Coach at Liberty Christian Academy in Lynchburg, VA, a position he has held since 2012. He enters his Tom Sox tenure with a wealth of experience at multiple levels, having coached at the high school, collegiate, and professional levels for over 25 years following a successful MLB playing career.

“I’m very happy to be able to coach the Tom Sox this summer,” said Tomlin. “I think it’s a tremendous opportunity for myself to grow as a coach and to be able to learn more about the game from the staff that I have, and also to help the young men that are coming. It’s a tremendous responsibility with the schools and players there that I don’t take lightly, but there’s also the opportunity to go out there and compete for a championship which is what the goal is. I’m excited for the opportunity to be able to do that at such a high level in the summer.”

Under Tomlin’s leadership, Liberty Christian has been one of the most successful teams in the state of Virginia. Since 2012, the team has won two state titles (2017 & 2022) and numerous regional championships. The program has also produced three pro players – Wes Clarke (former Waynesboro General), Zack Hess, and Tomlin’s son Quade – alongside a number of current and former collegiate players. In 2024, Tomlin led LCA to a state runner-up finish at nearby Monticello High School.

Prior to joining the Bulldogs, Tomlin spent five seasons as a pitching coach in the Washington Nationals organization. During his time with the Single-A Potomac Nationals and Double-A Harrisburg Senators, Tomlin coached players including Stephen Strasburg, Jordan Zimmermann, Drew Storen, and Ross Detwiler.

Tomlin served as pitching coach at his alma mater, Liberty University, from 1997-2006. During his time with the Flames, the Flames won a pair of Big South titles, advanced to two NCAA Regionals, and had 16 players drafted by an MLB franchise. Liberty pitchers garnered nine conference Pitcher of the Week honors after receiving just one prior to his tenure and six separate Flames were named either First or Second-Team All-Conference.

Tomlin enjoyed a five-year MLB career for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1990-1994, becoming the third Liberty player to appear in a major league game. Over 106 total appearances (94 starts), Tomlin had a 3.43 ERA, 297 strikeouts, and tossed eight complete games, including one in his MLB debut. He appeared in three NLCS games across the 1991 and 1992 seasons. He played his collegiate ball at Liberty, where he still ranks among the top ten in innings, complete games, shutouts, and strikeouts. He was inducted into the Liberty Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016.

During his time at Liberty, Tomlin played for the Valley League’s Madison Blue Jays.

Tomlin resides in Lynchburg alongside his wife Janet and son Coy, an assistant coach for the Tom Sox.
