CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Charlottesville Tom Sox announced on Tuesday (Sep. 17) that San Jacinto College Assistant Coach Kory Koehler will serve as the team’s head coach for the 2020 season.

Koehler replaces Monticello High School’s Corey Hunt, who served as Charlottesville’s head coach for the previous three seasons. Under Hunt’s leadership, the Tom Sox advanced to the Valley Baseball League Championship Series all three seasons, winning the Jim Lineweaver Cup in the 2017 and 2019 seasons. Hunt finishes his Tom Sox tenure with a career record of 86-46, including a 15-6 record in the playoffs.

Koehler joins the Tom Sox from San Jacinto College in Houston, Texas, where he has spent the last 20 seasons as a player and coach. Under NJCAA Hall of Fame Head Coach Tom Arrington, the Gators have consistently one of the best junior college programs in the country.

In Koehler’s time at San Jacinto, the Gators have qualified for 13 JUCO World Series (including two as a player), played in 6 National Championship games, and sent 133 players to the MLB Draft. Koehler most recently coached Jackson Rutledge to the 17th overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft – the highest overall selection ever by a junior college player.

Additionally, in 2019, Koehler was awarded the first ever ABCA National Assistant Coach of the Year at the NJCAA Division I level. In addition to his coaching duties, Koehler serves as an associate scout for the Minnesota Twins organization.

Says San Jacinto Head Coach Tom Arrington, “Kory is an outstanding coach and an even better person that has a deep seeded passion for the development of players and for the success of the San Jac baseball program. He possesses a tireless commitment toward San Jacinto College baseball and the pursuit of a national championship. Over the last [20] years of our friendship and work together at San Jac, Kory has continued to take on additional responsibilities in his development. While he is in charge of recruiting, hitting and offensive planning and development of the team, he has also done a tremendous job in our community outreach.”

Kory is married to his college sweetheart, Erika Nicole Koehler, and has two amazing sons, Keaton Jax (8) and Kason Jett (4).
