Tom Sox Face Turks in Rematch of Opening Day Loss

The Charlottesville Tom Sox (3-3), who own the longest active win streak in the VBL, will face the Harrisonburg Turks (3-2) tonight at Veterans Memorial Park. It will be broadcast live on the Turks Facebook page. First pitch is set for 7:30 P.M.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Charlottesville Tom Sox (3-3), who own the longest active win streak in the VBL, will face the Harrisonburg Turks (3-2) tonight at Veterans Memorial Park. It will be broadcast live on the Turks Facebook page. First pitch is set for 7:30 P.M.

Ticket Information: Admission to Turks games is $5 for adults, $3 for college students, $2 for senior citizens (65+), and $1 for children 12 and under. All tickets can be purchased at the gate.

LEADING OFF

  • The Tom Sox travel to Harrisonburg for the second time this season. The teams previously faced off on opening night, with the Turks taking home a 4-3 walk-off win.

  • After losing their first three games, the Tom Sox are on a three-game win streak. They have dispatched Staunton, Covington, and Waynesboro en route to a .500 record.

  • The three-game win streak is the longest active streak in the VBL.

  • One of the Valley League’s first-year coaches, Ramon Garza, will face off against the league’s longest-tenured head coach, Bob Wease.

  • Thanks to a postponed game against Staunton on Wednesday, the Tom Sox alternate home and road games through their first eight games.

  • Tom Vincent will make his second start of the season for Charlottesville. He got the start in the home opener against Covington, striking out five in 4.0 innings last Saturday.

 

SERIES vs HARRISONBURG

  • The Tom Sox have the Turks’ number recently, winning eight of the last ten games in the series.

  • The Turks took the first meeting this season on a walk-off single by Casey Smith in the ninth. Five of the seven combined runs were scored in the last three innings. Tristan Bissetta hit his first career home run in the game.

  • The ‘Sox won seven of the eight meetings against the Turks last season, with the only loss coming at Veterans Memorial Park.

  • Garrett Spikes, the lone returning hitter thus far, hit .150 (3-for-20) with three runs, one RBI, and two walks against the Turks last seaosn.

  • Harrisonburg is one of three VBL opponents that Charlottesville has an all-time lead of two or fewer games against. The Tom Sox are 20-19 against the Turks, 11-11 against the Rebels, and 22-23 against the Generals.

 

WIN STREAKIN’

  • After losing their first three games, the Tom Sox are on a three game win streak.

  • The Tom Sox are outscoring their opponents 21-11 during the streak, averaging 7.0 runs per game.

  • Julian Rojas leads the team with four RBI during the streak, while Hunter Sute and Gavin Abrams each have three. Abrams also has five walks over the span.

  • The 2021 ‘Sox – who finished with a 30-12 record – had four separate win streaks of at least three games, including one from June 6-15 (games 3-8).

 

BULLPEN LEADING THE WAY

  • The ‘Sox bullpen has been lights-out during the three-game win streak. They have a 2.20 ERA in 16.1 innings, allowing only four earned runs. Outside of Emmett Bice against Staunton, they have allowed only one earned run.

  • They have struck out 19 batters over that span and allowed a .130 opponent batting average.

  • In comparison, opponent bullpens have a 6.57 ERA with nine earned runs, 15 walks, and 12 strikeouts over the last three games.

 

SPIKES IS BACK

  • Georgia’s Garrett Spikes is the first 2021 returner to join the squad this summer after Georgia was eliminated from CWS contention.

  • Spikes led the Tom Sox in RBI last season (24), ranked fourth in batting average (.276), scored 18 runs, and stole ten bases.

Tom Sox to Face Cardinals in First Round of 2023 Playoffs

The Charlottesville Tom Sox (28-16) will face the Front Royal Cardinals (21-23) in the first round of the Valley Baseball League Playoffs. Games one and three (if necessary) will be played Thursday and Saturday at CHO Airport Field, while game two will be played Friday at Bing Crosby Stadium. First pitch for all three games is set for 7 p.m.
