LEADING OFF:
- Following a 2-game road trip, the Tom Sox return home to face the Turks for the first time this season.
- Charlottesville’s first meeting against Harrisonburg – scheduled for last Tuesday, June 4 – was postponed due to inclement weather.
- Last year’s championship appearance against the Turks was Charlottesville’s second consecutive appearance in the Valley League championship series and their fifth in the last six seasons.
- Following a season-opening loss, Charlottesville has won their last five games – tied for the longest win streak in the league.
- Charlottesville has hit nine home runs across their first six games, a team record for that span.
- Three of Charlottesville’s five wins have come via run rule.
IN A GROOVE:
- Following the season-opening loss to Staunton, Charlottesville has shown complete dominance on both sides of the ball.
- After falling 9-8 in the opener, Charlottesville has outscored their opponents by 55 runs (62 to 7) – an average of 11.0 runs per game.
- In those five games, Charlottesville has allowed only 14 hits (2.8 hits per game), including a pair of two hitters and an eight-inning one-hitter against Staunton on Thursday.
- Charlottesville has scored at least eight runs in every game this season, and has scored double-digit runs in every win.
- The Tom Sox have scored first in every game, out-hit their opponent in every game, and have scored in the first inning in four of their six games.
- Tom Sox batters occupy four of the top eight batting average spots in the VBL, four of the top five RBI men, and the league’s top two run scorers.
- Two of the five VBL players with multiple home runs are Tom Sox.
BELYEU BOMBS:
- Auburn outfielder Cade Belyeu has had a smoking-hot start to the 2024 summer.
- Through the team’s first six games, Belyeu has seven hits – four of which are home runs.
- Belyeu became the first ‘Sox player to hit two home runs in a home opener when he hit a pair of solo home runs in last Saturday’s game against Culpeper. He is the first ‘Sox player with three home runs in their first two games.
- Dating back to the end of his season at Auburn, the SEC All-Freshman selection has hit eight home runs in his last 11 games played.
CHART TOPPERS:
- A number of Tom Sox players have put up impressive offensive starts to the year.
- George Washington’s Robbie Lavey, who was named a Second Team All-Atlantic 10 selection, leads the squad early with a .458 average, which ranks second in the VBL. His 11 RBI trail only Belyeu (11) for the team lead, and are tied for second in the VBL.
- Virginia’s Tommy Roldan did not play his freshman season after rehabbing an injury, but he has played like a seasoned veteran. His .438 average is second on the team and tied for fourth in the league. His nine RBI are also tied for fourth in the league, along with teammate Ethan Gibson. Roldan started on the mound in Saturday’s game at Waynesboro.
- Similarly impressive performances have come from Johnnie Lopez (.400 BA, 7th in VBL), Landon Bruce (.364, T-11th), and Ethan Gibson (.353, 13th). As previously mentioned, Gibson also ranks among the league’s best with nine RBI on the young season.
AGAINST THE ‘BURG:
- The Tom Sox are 27-25 all-time against the Turks but have lost three-straight, thanks to a 0-2 sweep in last year’s championship series.
- Despite sharing a division from 2015-22, the Tom Sox and Turks had never met in the postseason prior to last season’s meeting.
- Charlottesville’s championship roster only featured 15 active players last season. The Tom Sox had to play the final game of the season with normal outfielder Garrett Spikes at shortstop (he threw 117 pitches in a start the previous night), catcher Salvy Alvarez at second base, and pitcher Luke Calveric at first. They faced a Turks team which featured a majority of its starting lineup from the regular season.
- Harrisonburg’s three-game win streak against Charlottesville is their longest since 2016-17. A win Tuesday will give them their longest win streak against the ‘Sox since 2015, Charlottesville’s inaugural season.
STAFF SPOTLIGHT:
- Charlottesville’s coaching staff in 2024 will feature a former major leaguer, a former Division I head coach, a former College World Series champion, and a current D-III assistant coach.
- Leading the staff will be former Pittsburgh Pirate Randy Tomlin, who pitched in 106 Major League games across his five-year career.
- Tomlin joins the ‘Sox while serving as the Head Coach of Liberty Christian Academy in Lynchburg. In his 12 seasons at Liberty Christian, the Bulldogs have won four state championships (two in VISAA, two in VHSL) and are currently competing for a fifth, sporting a perfect 22-0 record on the season.
- Ten-year University of Georgia Head Coach Scott Stricklin joins the Tom Sox as Tomlin’s lead assistant. In his ten years with the Bulldogs, Stricklin coached in three NCAA Regionals, a pair of which were hosted in Athens.
- 2015 College World Series champion Kenny Towns joins the staff as an assistant coach. Towns is Virginia’s record-holder in postseason games played and was named to a trio of All-Regional teams. This will be Towns’ first collegiate coaching experience.
- Mary Washington Pitching Coach Adam Dofflemyer joins the Tom Sox in the same role in 2024. This season, the Eagles went 27-13 and won the opening game of their conference tournament against top-10 Salisbury before falling to Christopher Newport.
- Finally, Coy Tomlin (Randy’s son) will support the Tom Sox from the dugout as an assistant coach all season long.
NEW IN ‘24:
- Beginning this season, the Valley League will play a modified 40-game schedule, as opposed to the 44-game schedule played last season.
- All 40 regular season games will be played against divisional opponents for the first time, eliminating inter-division play and significant travel for teams.
- Following the regular season, the top three teams from each division will be seeded 1-3. The 2 and 3-seeds will face off in a single wild-card game, which will determine who will face the one seed in the division championship.
- Both the best-of-3 division championship and VBL Championship series will take place as in prior years, with the North and South division champions facing off for the Jim Lineweaver Trophy.
- For the first time, the Valley League’s All-Star festivities will take place across two days. Purcellville will host VBL All-Star Weekend on June 29 and 30 which will feature the traditional home run derby & game, plus a high school home run derby, live music, and other exciting events.

- Langford earned the honor of becoming Charlottesville’s first-ever first round pick when he was selected fourth overall in last summer’s MLB Draft. According to MLB.com, he was the third-fastest hitter ever to reach MLB, earning a starting role as a rookie on the Texas Rangers.
- Additionally, two former ‘Sox pitchers have appeared in Major League games this spring – Cincinnati’s Carson Spiers and Pittsburgh’s Kyle Nicolas.
