CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Charlottesville Tom Sox (14-11) kept their hot streak going following the Fourth of July victory, running the Covington Lumberjacks (12-13) out of the park 16-0. This performance marks 33 runs scored in the last two games for the Sox. The 7-inning run rule came into effect for the second-straight game, ending the game after the top of the seventh.
The Tom Sox offense got off to a quick start, recording six runs in the first inning. Christian Martin (Virginia Tech) stole second base early, then Carter Cunningham (East Carolina) started the scoring off; hitting an RBI double. Moments later, Trey Yunger (Wofford) hit a two-run double to right field to put the ‘Sox up 3-0. Matthew Prevesk (Florida) then hit a single to left field, sending Yunger in for the fourth run of the game. The ‘Sox would send 12 batters to the plate during the first inning. Martin hit another two-run double, giving Charlottesville a six-run cushion through one.
In the second inning, the Tom Sox continued building their momentum with three more runs. Prevesk recorded another two RBI to make it 8-0. Shortly after, Brody Moss (Auburn) hit an RBI single to build the lead to 9-0.
The game became quiet for the next two innings as neither team had hits in the fourth or fifth inning. The ‘Sox would end up recording three more runs in the fifth inning, including one run scored from a bases-loaded hit by pitch of Cole Wagner (Georgia). After five complete innings the score was 12-0.
The final four runs were scored in the sixth. The first five runners reached in the inning, the latter two of Satchell Norman (Florida Southwestern) and Luke Wagner (Georgia) hitting RBI singles. Back-to-back sacrifice flies by Julian Rojas (Radford) and Yunger made it a final of 16-0.
There was no answer from the Lumberjacks in the seventh on a frustrating night for them offensively, only recording three hits.
The ‘Sox play their first of three-straight road games Wednesday, facing the Harrisonburg Turks at Veterans Memorial Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 P.M.
