WAYNESBORO, Va. – The Charlottesville Tom Sox (4-5) snapped their two-game losing streak Wednesday, edging out the Waynesboro Generals (5-5) 10-7 at Kate Collins Field. The hitting struggles continued for much of the game for the ‘Sox. At one point of the game, they had five runs on one hit. They were able to get the bats going a little, recording seven hits total. It was a back-and-forth game throughout, but Charlottesville held on for a much-needed win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The ‘Sox took advantage of poor pitching early. Logan Amiss (VCU) led the second inning off with a walk. Georgia teammates Cole Wagner and Garrett Spikes were then hit by pitches which loaded the bases. Hunter Teplanszky (TCU) recorded an RBI after taking ball four. Kyle Edwards (Old Dominion) brought Wagner home on a fielder’s choice, as Teplanszky was thrown out at second, but the inning continued. An Edwards steal and a bobbled catch at second allowed Spikes to steal home, giving Charlottesville a three-run cushion.

  • The Generals answered in the third. A pair of singles and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for them with one out. A sacrifice fly and an RBI walk closed the deficit to one run. Kyle Edwards would bring the lead back to two in the fourth inning, after he put the center fielder on the warning track for an RBI double that brought Teplanszky home. However, the Generals again put pressure on the Tom Sox pitchers, loading the bases again and scoring two runs on a single and a hit by pitch.

  • In the fifth inning, Gavin Abrams (Clemson) advanced from first base to third base on an errant throw by the catcher. A Satchell Norman (Florida Southwestern) sacrifice fly brought Abrams home, making it a 5-4 ballgame. The Generals took the lead in the sixth after scoring two runs. More damage could have been done, but a diving catch and an impressive throw from center fielder Trey Yunger (Wofford) tagged the runner out at third to end the inning.

  • Amiss batted in his first run of the season in the seventh inning, bringing Yunger home to tie the game at six. The Generals regained the lead on an RBI single, but the lead would not last long, as a wild pitch allowed Edwards to come home in the eighth.

  • A Garrett Spikes double put him and Amiss in scoring position in the 9th. Nic Ericsson (VCU) then hit an RBI single to bring his college teammate home. A groundout by Teplanszky brought in Spikes, and a Kyle Edwards triple sent Ericsson home. Jack Billings (Coastal Carolina) closed the game out, striking out two of the three batters he faced.

GAME INSIGHTS:

  • The Tom Sox utilized their pitching depth, using six arms for the second straight game. Lance Tate (Hampden-Sydney) had a strong day on the mound until getting trapped in a bases loaded situation. In 2.2 innings, Tate allowed three hits and two earned runs, striking out and walking one batter each. Tayler Montiel (Mississippi State) came in in relief and got out of the tough situation, but he had his own issues in the 4th inning. In 1.1 innings, he struck out three but allowed two runs. Luke Wagner (Georgia) made his Tom Sox debut and was hot out the gates, striking out the first batter he saw. He, too, pitched 1.1 innings and allowed two runs. Jackson Nove (Kentucky) entered the game in the 6th with runners on the corners but was able to get out the inning without an earned run. He did let up a run in the 7th and did not record a strikeout. Tyler McLoughlin (Emory) was brought in the game in the 8th, allowing a single and striking out a batter. Billings closed the game out for the Sox with two strikeouts.

  • The bats did not get going until very late into the game, with six of the team’s hits coming from the seventh inning onward. Edwards was the star from the plate for the Tom Sox. After taking the day off against the Staunton Braves, he went 3-5 with two RBIs and was a home run shy of recording the cycle. Three players made their first starts in the batting lineup: Amiss, Wagner and Ericsson. Amiss walked three times and had an RBI single. Wagner went hitless, and Ericsson struggled until his 9th inning go-ahead RBI single.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

  • The Tom Sox put up their second game with 10+ runs this season, joining the win over Staunton on June 6 (13). They scored double-digit runs against Waynesboro for the first time since July of 2018.

  • The game featured a total of ten hit-by-pitches, five from each team – the most combined HBPs in a game in Tom Sox history.

    • The five Generals hit by Tom Sox pitchers were tied for the most all-time (happened two other times, both against Staunton), while the five Tom Sox batters hit by pitches was second-most all-time (six at Staunton, 6/2/19)

    • Added with the 12 combined walks, the game featured 22 free passes.

  • Kyle Edwards finished the game a home run away from the cycle. He tallied his third multi-hit effort of the season and is the only player this season with multiple multi-hit games.

  • Both Edwards and Logan Amiss reached base in four of their five plate appearances.

  • Cole and Luke Wagner made their Tom Sox debuts in the game, while Logan Amiss and Nic Ericsson both started for the first time this year.

  • Tom Sox batters struck out 13 times, the fifth game this season with 10+ strikeouts at the plate.

  • Tom Sox pitchers have walked 6+ batters in each of the last four games, and six of the nine games this season.
