CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Tom Sox are welcoming back three key players from the 2021 team back to Charlottesville in 2022. Logan Amiss (Outfield, VCU), Brady Kirtner (RHP, Virginia Tech), and Garrett Spikes (Infield/Outfield, Georgia) will return to help guide the team towards a 2022 Valley League title.
Logan Amiss, a Valley League veteran, will be making his third trip to the Valley League in as many college seasons (not including the 2020 COVID year). After being named Second Team All-VBL as a catcher for the Covington Lumberjacks in 2019, he backed it up with a stellar season for Charlottesville in 2021. Amiss was one of five Tom Sox hitters to bat over .300 during the regular season after hitting at a .301 clip. He was also one of four players to finish the season with over 15 RBI (18) and racked up eight doubles, tied for the most on the team for the entire season – despite playing only 31 games. He also registered a unique record for the ‘Sox, being hit by eight pitches – tied for the most in team history (Dan Harwood, 2019).
Amiss also continues the tradition of the Tom Sox-VCU connection, as VCU is one of three schools to send a player to the Tom Sox in every season entering 2022 (Davidson & Wake Forest).
Brady Kirtner was one of the top starters in the Valley League, proving as one of the Tom Sox’s aces throughout the summer despite having never pitched in college. Kirtner led all qualifying Tom Sox pitchers in ERA (3.18) and was second in strikeouts (37), innings (28.1) and opponent batting average (.181). He finished tied for first in the Valley League in strikeouts per 9 innings (12.8). Kirtner was named a Valley League All-Star and the #13 starter in the Valley League in 2021 by All Things Valley League.
Garrett Spikes was one of the ‘Sox’s top power hitters in 2021 and returns to do more of the same in ’22. Spikes hit .276 (tied for 4th on the team among qualified batters) with three home runs (T-2nd) and led the team in RBI (24). He also proved to be a run threat at any point with ten stolen bases. He was named a Valley League All-Star as an outfielder. Spikes was especially volatile on the road, hitting .321 with 14 RBI and seven of his ten stolen bases away from Charlottesville. His best stretch came in the front half of July, hitting .452 with 14 RBI, two doubles, a triple, and two home runs from July 3-13.
Amiss, Kirtner, and Spikes join Head Coach Ramon Garza and a host of new players as they begin their season in Harrisonburg on June 3, followed by the home opener against Covington on June 4. Admission and parking at home games is free all season long thanks to Carter Bank & Trust.
